Discovering a massive meteorite crater

An international team lead by researchers from the Centre for GeoGenetics at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen have discovered a 31-km wide meteorite impact crater buried beneath the ice-sheet in the northern Greenland. This is the first time that a crater of any size has been found under one of Earth’s continental ice sheets.

During this periode worms digging around on the sea floor changed the water chemistry completely which fuelled this explosion of life. The tiny activity of bioturbation pushed life from two dimensions to three dimensions and introduced a multitude of life we still see the ancestors of today.

In the summer of 1931 Eigil Nielsen found a very significant fossils on a hill side in East Greenland. The fossil was identified as a missing link between fishes and early terrestrial vertebrates. Later it played a very important role in the dispute Denmark versus Norway at the International Court at Haague about the right to East Greenland.
