<video:description>
The field of sedimentary ancient DNA, which studies ancient genetic signals preserved in sediments, allows us to reveal ecosystem-wide responses to past environmental changes beyond what has so far been possible with standard environmental proxies.

Such insights are particularly important for the Arctic, where warming is happening at a rate four times faster than the global average and where important climate tipping points are of global societal concern.

Paleo Ecologist at GEUS, Heike Zimmermann, searches to answer how far back in time we can use DNA to uncover interactions between climate, the ocean, and the biosphere. And how arctic marine ecosystems have reacted to past climate changes.
</video:description>

            <video:title>The Color of Ice Trailer</video:title>
            <video:description>The landscape of North Greenland is changing, fast. The Color of Ice follows a scientist testing a new drill and a hunter navigating a shifting icescape. When an old sea-ice sledging route becomes unreliable, they meet at a new crossroads on the ice sheet. The drill testing reveals how the daily routine of climate research is marked by small setbacks and victories. Ultimately, however, the ice-sheet crossroads highlight the striking changes now confronting Greenland.

            <video:description>Efter næsten et halvt århundrede vender geolog og seniorforsker Peter Frykman (GEUS) tilbage til et af sine største fund. I 1977 opdagede han og en studiekammerat en række huler dybt inde i et fjeld i Nordøstgrønland. I dag viser det sig, at de samme huler gemmer på viden om fortiden i form af klimasignaler i drypsten, som kan bruges til at forbedre klimamodeller.

            <video:description>På verdensplan udledes der store mængder CO2, som vi må bestræbe os på at få væk igen, hvis vi skal afhjælpe de klimaforandringer, vi står over for. Er CCS løsningen? Hvordan fungerer det egentlig? Og hvordan passer det ind i det naturlige CO2-kredsløb? I denne Geoviden-film får vi svar på disse spørgsmål og udforsker hvordan lagring af CO2 i den danske undergrund er en af de løsninger, som kan hjælpe med at reducere mængden af CO2 i atmosfæren.</video:description>

            <video:description>At the moment, the climate is experiencing a big rise of atmospheric CO2 from around 280 PPM in the pre-industrial era, to nearly 420 PPM today. The last time earth witnessed similar atmospheric CO2 concentrations was millions of years ago during the Miocene time.
Senior researcher at GEUS, Kasia Śliwinska explains how she studies past climate during the Miocene, and what her results can teach us about our present situation.</video:description>

            <video:title>Mapping of Greenland</video:title>

            <video:title>The Color of Ice Trailer</video:title>
            <video:description>The landscape of North Greenland is changing, fast. The Color of Ice follows a scientist testing a new drill and a hunter navigating a shifting icescape. When an old sea-ice sledging route becomes unreliable, they meet at a new crossroads on the ice sheet. The drill testing reveals how the daily routine of climate research is marked by small setbacks and victories. Ultimately, however, the ice-sheet crossroads highlight the striking changes now confronting Greenland.

            <video:description>Hvor meget vil havet stige omkring Danmarks kyster?

In this Geoviden video, we journey through the Danish treasure hunt for oil and gas and see how decades worth of exploration has created a priceless legacy: Many kilometers of drill cores and samples make up a national archive of the underground. An archive that researchers can use when they, for example, are looking for the best location for a new geothermal plant or subsurface CO2 storage site. Find the entire topic on the decommissioning of oil and gas production in Denmark at geoviden.dk/oliedanmark</video:description>

            <video:title>Water pathways</video:title>
            <video:description>The aquatic environment in Denmark is threatened by diffuse leaching of nutrients and pesticides from agricultural production. To implement action plans to reduce nutrient and pollution pressure a thorough understanding of the watercycle is needed. For this project we use stable water and nitrate isotopes together with chemical element composition of different water sources this project aims to explain where does streamflow originate from, what flowpaths did it take to become streamflow, and how long time will the water spent in the catchment from entering as rain to exit as streamflow.”

The short: “The CONTRA-project aims to use stable isotopes of water and nitrate together with the chemical element composition of different water sources to line out/map the hydrological cycle within a river catchment and quantify different water sources to rivers and the turn-over age in hydrological catchments.

            <video:title>Draved skov</video:title>
Ligesom de ville have gjort i bondestenalderen.

<video:title>Camp Century - buried under ice</video:title>
            <video:description>Camp Century is an abandoned Cold War-era military base in the near-surface layers of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In response to concerns from the Government of Greenland over the potential remobilization of its contaminants by climate change, the Government of Denmark established the Camp Century Climate Monitoring Programme in 2017.

Since the programme was established, scientists have been able to retrieve precise weather data from Camp century. Their new study suggest that snow will continue to accumulate at Camp century within the present century, which means that the abandoned camp will remain buried under ice.

Volcán Domuyo is the tallest volcano in Argentina, and characterized by extremely silica-rich and viscous magma compositions. New research the past 5 years has shown an increase in activity at the volcano through surface inflations and gas explosions. In this project, we aim to determine the pressure and temperature conditions in the magma chamber, and identify the source and evolution of Domuyo, using isotope analyses, age dating and crystal compositions. This knowledge is essential to understand the volcano and potential future eruptions.

Fossils from at least eight different types of dinosaur have been found in Denmark. Fossil hunter and paleontologist Jesper Milán has found fossilized tracks from both sauropods and an armored dinosaur and he explains how our knowledge about animals from the past can help us further understand the dynamics in modern day ecosystems and climate change. Including how they became extinct.

<video:description>All-WET (all weather evapotransportation) is a research project investigating spatial patterns of all-weather evapotranspiration (ET). ET quantifies the transport of water from land to the atmosphere. In the ALL-WET project, we apply novel satellite remote sensing methods to study ET over the Sengal basin in West Africa. In particular, we utilize microwave based data which are tolerant to clouds. Thereby, microwave satellites provide all weather estimations of ET which is highly relevant in sub tropical and tropical regions of the world, like the Senegal basin, which are generally strongly affected by cloud cover.</video:description>

<video:title>CAMP CENTURY: CLIMATE AND ICE MONITORING</video:title>
            <video:description>Camp Century is an abandoned Cold War-era military base in the near-surface layers of the Greenland Ice Sheet. In response to concerns from the Government of Greenland over the potential remobilization of its contaminants by climate change, the Government of Denmark established the Camp Century Climate Monitoring Programme in 2017. Climate and ice monitoring instruments were established at Camp Century in summer 2017. The sub-surface debris field was also surveyed by ice-penetrating radar. This monitoring programme aims to refine knowledge of the spatial extent and vertical range of the debris field, as well as project changes in meltwater production and near-surface ice-sheet structure in response to climate change, in order to inform science-based discussions of the shifting fate of Camp Century. This monitoring programme is jointly funded by GEUS and the Danish Cooperation for Environment in the Arctic (DANCEA) within the Danish Ministry for Energy, Utilities and Climate. Technical reports and near real-time monitoring data are available at www.campcenturyclimate.dk

            <video:description>Very little is known about the evolution of the Arctic Ocean and its influence on the past global climate. This project closes this knowledge gap by a systematic review of the available geophysical data from the Arctic Ocean. The study reveals a piece of the history of this remote area.
<video:title>How much snow falls on Greenland?</video:title>
            <video:description>As our climate changes from enhanced greenhouse effect (i.e. global warming), the air now holds more moisture. Consequently, rainfall and snowfall intensity is increasing.

So, the question is what is the balance between increasing snow fall and increasing ice melt?

Professor Jason Box has been working to answer this question using a ski-based traverse on the Greenland Ice sheet in 2017. With some low tech measurements of how much does the snow weigh, he can check the high tech - satellites and climate models. The results revealed that although snowfall is important for building up glaciers, melting is still dominating and so the balance is negative

            <video:title>STORIES FROM THE GEUS ARCHIVE - SEARCHING FOR OIL IN NORTH GREENLAND IN 1985</video:title>
            <video:description>During the 1980ies geologists were looking for energy all over the world, and in 1984 the first systematic oil geological investigations were started in North Greenland to map the hydrocarbon potential. During the summers of 1984 and 1985 geologists were drilling cores and mapped the rocks to search for signs, that oil has been formed. It is challenging to work in this large remote part of the world.</video:description>

            <video:description>In the future we may be able to give a much more detailed description of our underground using the newly developed Geo Radar approach.

Here scientists Majken Zibar and Espen Bing Svendsen are in the early stages of testing this new method and its possibility of helping us to determine the best way to protect our ground water supply . This way of measuring the underground will be much more detailed and fast than previously possible.</video:description>

            <video:title>Greenland melting</video:title>
            <video:description>New study shows abrupt shift in the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. Since 1975 the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland has monitored the Tasersiaq-bassin in South west Greenland. The study presents the first actual timeseries representing 40 years of measurements. The results can prove crucial for future model validation.

The study is published in Science Advances. Link here:

<video:description>A pioneer, Anker Weidick was the first, and for a very long time the only, scientist working on the Greenland glacier inventory. It is only now, several decades later, that widespread Greenland glacier inventories are attempted and with the aid of abundant computing power. ‘All the modern glacier sensitivity studies from Greenland rely on the pioneering work done by Anker Weidick well before it became “modern”.’

Here Arne gives a small lecture about his outstanding career.</video:description>

Systematic geological mapping of North Greenland was carried out by GEUS over a five year period from 1978-1980 and again from1984-1985. The work was logistically supported from larger basecamps established in the remote end empty landscapes. See how the geologists are working and learn about daily life in the base camp.</video:description>

            <video:description>Hans Island is a tiny island lying in the middle of Nares Strait between Greenland and Canada. No decision has been made as to whom has the sovereignty of Hans Island. In 1984 the Danish Minister for Greenland Tom Høyem visited the GEUS base camp in North Greenland to follow the geological mapping activities. During his stay the Minister visited Hans Island to mark, that he regarded the island as Danish/Greenlandic territory. In 2018, Denmark, Greenland and Canada have set up a working group to solve the border issue.</video:description>

            <video:title>NEW ENERGY SOLUTIONS - CAN BIOMASS REPLACE FOSSIL RESOURCES</video:title>
            <video:description>Climate change is happening and can be seen everywhere around the world.
Niclas Scott Bentsen - associate professor at Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management - is currently investigating how to mitigate climate change by replacing fossil resources with bio mass.
On a large scale projects like this would mean a serious cut to carbon emissions.

<video:title>Arctic explorations</video:title>
            <video:description>The historical archive at Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) contains thousands of photos and films from past expeditions to Greenland. It is a historical documentation of the geological exploration of this large arctic country. Some of these recordings are digitized to make them available for a larger audience. It is tempting to say, that the present archive is the key to the past.

Niels Henriksen participated in geological expeditions in Greenland through 35 years. From these, he was in command during 25 years, to chart the geological mapping of Greenland.</video:description>

            <video:title>Saltwater intrusion & traces of pharmaceuticals</video:title>
            <video:description>Groundwater abstraction, rising sea levels and draining of agricultural soils result in saltwater intrusion and problems for groundwater quality in coastal regions, globally. Various solutions have been developed to protect coastal groundwater resources, but in the search for the most efficient solution, researchers at GEUS have found another issue of increasing global concern – pharmaceuticals.

This is the third and final movie from the project “Water4coasts”. The project is part-funded by Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark under their Ecoinnovation Program, www.ecoinnovation.dk

The final report from the project including an English Summary and GEUS reports in English in the Appendix, is available here: http://svana.dk/publikationer/2016/dec/water4coasts-nye-metoder-til-integreret-forvaltning-og-beskyttelse-af-kystnaere-vandressourcer

The Water4Coasts project is continued in the EU Horizon 2020 project ”SubSol” (www.subsol.org, 2015-2018), where Dutch subsurface water solutions to control salt water intrusion are tested in a fractured Chalk aquifer in the Water4Coasts test site on the Island of Falster.</video:description>

            <video:description>What forms the future. Our cities, as of today, stands a challenge in adapting to the change in climate and growing need to build and live in a sustainable way.

Research is done within the field and solutions are possible. Dorthe Hedensted Lund is one of those researchers aiming to create cities that will last over time and adapt to change

            <video:title>SOAPSTONE - finding resources in cultural tradition</video:title>
            <video:description>The Nuuk area holds a large amount of potentially interesting sites for small-scale-mining and also represent opportunities for geotourism and archaeological investigations.

Partly inspired by the Canadian region Nunavut where a significant group of carvers use soapstone figurines sold as “inuit art” to supplement their income, a new cross-disciplinary research-project from GEUS, the University of Greenland and the Natural History Museum of Denmark aims to build a similar line of products in the Nuuk area. Making knowledge on soapstone occurrences available is a first step in this direction.

            <video:description>Some 470 million years ago, during the middle part of the geological period known as the Ordovician, an asteroid collision took place somewhere between Mars and Jupiter. The collision caused an explosion that sent a cascade of meteorites towards Earth.</video:description>

            <video:description>Earthquakes are constantly monitored by GEUS's permanent and temporary seismograph stations in Denmark and Greenland. From here seismologists register large earthquakes globally and local, as well as tremors from explosions, traffic and other human disruptions that take place close to the instruments. Follow Trine Dahl Jensen from GEUS in her work monitoring earthquakes in Denmark and hear how a seismologist work.</video:description>

            <video:title>A farmer’s dilemma</video:title>
            <video:description>There is a saying that goes "The best thing about the good old days - is the fact they are not coming back". Being the sixth generation farmer on the old family property, Mogens Haugaard Nielsen is a modern farmer with a long running history of farming the soils of Stevns in Denmark. In the conventional farming of today, pesticides are among one of the ways to optimize production. Take a look at what Mogens thinks about the Danish Pesticide Leaching Assessment Programme and how he is coorporating with the researchers by subletting his field to the programme (www.pesticidvarsling.dk)</video:description>

            <video:description>The Cambrian Explosion is by some referred to as the big bang of biology. During this periode worms digging around on the sea floor changed the water chemistry completely which fuelled this explosion of life. The tiny activity of bioturbation pushed life from two dimensions to three dimensions and introduced a multitude of life we still see the ancestors of today.</video:description>

            <video:title>The Ordovician climate paradox – searching for earliest evidence of an ice age</video:title>
            <video:description>Long believed to have been an integral part of an Early Palaeozoic super-greenhouse, Ordovician climate has in recent years undergone a remarkable revision. Thus, it now appears that a much cooler climate prevailed throughout most of the period. Here, a team of palaeontologists set out to search for the earliest fossil and geochemical evidence for an Ordovician icehouse on the Swedish island of Öland.</video:description>

            <video:title>Opportunities and limits of metal recycling within a circular economy</video:title>
            <video:description>Metallurgy is at the heart of developing a circular economy as metals all have strong intrinsic recycling potentials. Moving towards closed material-loops requires for the metallurgical industry to continue to refine its processing methods and adapt to the changing and ever complicating waste fractions.
However, circular economy is a popular expression currently, and Markus Reuter emphasize that actions on the metallurgical infrastructure are needed to make this buzzword more than just "hot air" as he expresses himself.</video:description>

            <video:title>Urban X</video:title>
            <video:description>What is value in a pursuit; Hector Urquhart had this introduction to the 1860's Popular Tales of the West Highlands.

"Practical men may despise the tales, earnest men condemn them as lies, some even consider them wicked ; one refused to write any more for a whole estate ; my best friend says they are all ' blethers.' But one man's rubbish may be another's treasure, and what is the standard of value in such a pursuit as this?"

MiMa at GEUS has set out to pursue this quest in the project Urban X

            <video:title>Building materials as raw materials source</video:title>
            <video:description>Helmuth Rechberger, Prof. Dr. techn., Technisches Universität Wien, gives a run down of a different approach (than the typical) to where our future resources in society can be mined. In our ever changing cities we have stacked all different kinds of resources into buildings. In this lecture Rechberger shows how he and his colleagues have ‘mapped’ the building stock of the city of Wienna seeing buildings from a resource perspective.

The lecture was given at a MiMa Meeting April 2016. For further information about MiMa (Center for Minerals and Materials):
<video:title>Factors affecting mineral criticality: the US perspective</video:title>
            <video:description>The supply of critical minerals constitutes an important factor for any modern society. For the last decennials this topic has gained focus around the world with a growing population and an ever broader use of minerals in modern products and technologies. An insight to the US perspective of that is here given by Steven Fortier, Director of National Minerals Information Center, U.S. Geological Survey. The presentation is based upon the report Assessment of critical minerals: Screening methodology and initial application, released march 2016. In this report a screening of 50 elements is featured as a base of discussion for a national call to action.

The lecture was given at a MiMa Meeting on Geocenter Denmark, February 4th, 2016.

            <video:title>Early warnings on pesticide leaching</video:title>
            <video:description>Pesticides are use in most modern farming to control pests and their potential leaching into our groundwater is often debated. This raises some central questions on their safe use involving for example how much to use, on which crops and at what time of the year? A solid pesticide monitoring program has been developed in a joint venture between GEUS, The Danish EPA, and Department of Agro Ecology and Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University

<video:description>In the summer of 1931 Eigil Nielsen found a very significant fossils on a hill side in East Greenland. The fossil was identified as a missing link between fishes and early terrestrial vertebrates. Later it played a very important role in the dispute Denmark versus Norway at the International Court at Haague about the right to East Greenland.</video:description>

            <video:description>Physical volcanologist and ph.d. Johanne Schmith from Department of Geoscience and Natural Resource Management (IGN) is investigating ash particles from two major historical eruptions in the volcano Katla.

The outbreaks occurred in 1755 and 1625 and sent large ash clouds over northern Europe. In her work, she tries to find out how these particles were formed, how they could travel so far, and what the probability is for this to happen again.
</video:description>

            <video:title>Professor John Ludden – Independent survey on fracking</video:title>
            <video:description>British Geological Survey (BGS) works with area universities to survey fracking operations in UK’s first independent research.

In this lecture Professor John Ludden, Executive Director of the BGS, explains the thoughts behind the project, and how the research will provide new scientific insight in monitoring the environment impact of shale gas development.
BGS estimates shale basins in the country may hold more than 1.3 quadrillion cubic feet of natural gas. However, hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a technique that has been largely debated controversial.

            <video:description>Mols bjerge is an iconic landscape in Denmark. The general believe is that the hills was formed by the last ice age, which left large deposits and shaped the landscape.

However a group of scienteist from Aarhus University are now investigating another theory. A theory which would date the landscape back to an even older origin. The answer could come from a seismic investigation of the underground. We followed a group of students in the field and learned how they approached this theory.
</video:description>

            <video:description>Researchers are currently investigating how the injection of treated fresh surface water into the groundwater reservoir can protect valuable water resoures in coastal zones and prevent salt water intrusion into groundwater used for drinking water. Follow the researchers in the joint venture between Denmark, China and Brazil in the work of securing our drinking water in a project funded by the Danish Ministry of Environment, GEUS, the China Geological Survey, and universities in Brazil and China.
For further information on current salt water intrusion research in Denmark and abroad see: http://www.swim23.com/ and http://www.hydrol-earth-syst-sci.net/17/421/2013/hess-17-421-2013.pdf , and for further information on the Water4Coasts project see abstract for the SWIM23 conference in June 2014 in Husum, Germany at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6xsfgi44vuhe6xv/A-159_Hinsby%20et%20al2014.pdf?dl=0
</video:description>

            <video:title>The Anthropocene - Theis Ørntoft</video:title>
            <video:description>Theis Ørntoft is a Danish poet who recently published a collection of poems called "Digte 2014".

"His poems write themselves into the dark ecology; an ecological disaster-consciousness devoid of any sentimental relationship with nature. Not all poets use language spanning from "Cretaceous" to "the future", and from the "Mariana Trench" to the "Milky Way".

"Theis Ørntoft creates a universe where layers of natural history, self history, world history, architectural history , biblical history , and history of science overlay each other in a strange poetic geology" - Politiken.

We have spoken with Theis on the anthropocene matter and how it affects his poetry.
</video:description>

            <video:title>Changing Fjords</video:title>
            <video:description>The local fisherman Johannes and marine biologist Kristine both live by the Godthåbsfjord outside Nuuk. In a story about arctic science, traditional folklore and climate change, we meet them in their daily interaction with nature. An old greenlandic legend tells the story of the Mother of the Sea. If humans treat her bad, she holds back the sea creatures so that people will starve. The story is a testimony of respect to nature and is perhaps more relevant now than ever before.

Produced for Greenland Climate Research Centre in Nuuk. </video:description>
