Studies of volcanic ash eruptions

Physical volcanologist and ph.d. Johanne Schmith from Department of Geoscience and Natural Resource Management (IGN) is investigating ash particles from two major historical eruptions in the volcano Katla.

The outbreaks occurred in 1755 and 1625 and sent large ash clouds over northern Europe. In her work, she tries to find out how these particles were formed, how they could travel so far, and what the probability is for this to happen again.
